Foreign body sensation in the throat

In many people, small amounts of stomach acid flow up into the esophagus and from there into the throat and into the nose. This return is called a reflux.

Typical complaints are a burning sensation behind the breastbone or a sour taste in the mouth. Here it is easy to find the cause of the complaints.

Atypical symptoms are a lumpy feeling, the feeling that mucus is running down the throat or frequent clearing of the throat. A gastroscopy is usually performed here. In special cases, the acidity in the esophagus is also measured over a 24-hour period. In some sufferers, however, the symptoms are triggered by gaseous acid, which settles in the throat and the back of the nose. The endoscopy of the esophagus and the measurement of the acid in the esophagus are then usually unremarkable. This acid can be detected by residual tech. We usually leave the measuring probe in place for 48 hours in order to also record rarer episodes, because not every day is like the other and in some patients the phenomenon does not occur every day.

This procedure cannot yet be billed via statutory health insurance. In special cases, however, it helps to find the cause of the symptoms. If you, too, feel unexplained complaints in your throat, we may be able to clarify them with this method.
